Dhaka Customs seizes 80 gold bars worth Tk20 crore

Dhaka Customs has recovered 80 gold bars valued around Tk20 crore from under a passenger seat on a Flydubai aircraft at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).

Acting on a tip-off, customs officials searched the aircraft around 9:40 pm on Wednesday. They discovered several packets wrapped in black scotch tape hidden under seat 19-A.

Then customs officials brought the packets to the customs hall and found 80 gold bars, weighing around 9.33 kilograms.

They said no one has claimed ownership of the gold bars and initially suspect that perpetrators smuggled the gold into the country to evade government duties and taxes.

Customs officials stored the gold bars in the airport customs warehouse. The process of depositing the gold bars with the Bangladesh Bank is underway. They filed a case at the Airport Police Station.

Customs House said they will continue their surveillance and operations to protect the economy and prevent the smuggling of gold and other goods.
