Adani cuts power supply amid crisis

Adani Power has reduced its electricity supply to Bangladesh. Although the company’s Godda power plant in Jharkhand had been supplying nearly 1,500 megawatts of electricity, its average supply has stood at 1,000 megawatts for several days. During the day, the supply is between 800 and 850 megawatts while at night it reaches between 1,100 and 1,300 megawatts.

The reduction in Adani’s power supply for more than a month amid the country’s severe electricity crisis has drawn widespread criticism. In this situation, Adani Power has issued an official explanation.

In a statement issued Wednesday, September 2, through Five W Communications, Adani Power’s public relations firm in Bangladesh, the company said the movement of coal carrying rakes to the Godda power plant had been disrupted. As a result, coal supplies have declined compared with normal levels and production has had to be temporarily adjusted.

Adani said electricity supply has been kept lower during off peak hours in the daytime to ensure adequate power supply during the evening peak demand period. “We have kept the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) informed about the situation and are working closely with Indian Railways to ensure the availability of regular rakes as soon as possible. The situation is expected to return to normal soon. Various measures are being taken to minimize the impact on electricity supply as much as possible and to maintain coal supplies to the power plant at the highest possible level.”

The company also said coal stockpiles at several thermal power plants in eastern and central India have declined due to excessive rainfall. As a result, coal supplies to power plants across the region have been disrupted. The Godda power plant has two units with a capacity of 800 megawatts each and supplies electricity exclusively to Bangladesh under a long-term agreement with the BPDB.
