Activists from Awami League (AL), a party whose activities are banned, allegedly attacked police in Sujanagar in Pabna on Thursday after making an announcement over a mosque loudspeaker.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Sufi Ullah confirmed the matter. The assault left two individuals injured, including Sujanagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mozaffar Hossain and Constable Sabuj.
According to police reports, a festive atmosphere surrounded World Cup football match from Wednesday night until dawn. Based on secret information that leaders of AL, led by Sujanagar Upazila unit president Abdul Wahab, were planning sabotage.
Police added that upon seeing the officers, an announcement was made from a mosque’s microphone. Then over 100 party activists and several hundred supporters, armed with weapons, attacked the officers.
They vandalized two police vehicles and injured the OC and the constable.
While police identified Wahab as the leader of the attack, he dismissed the allegations as “completely false and baseless.” Wahab said, “I cannot even go to the area because of police raids, so there is no question of being present there.”
SP Sufi added, “Two police members were injured in the attack. They are receiving treatment. Legal action against those involved is underway.”
