Four Madrasa students drown while bathing in a canal

Four children drowned while bathing in a canal in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi. The accident took place this afternoon, Thursday, in the Barkanda area of Chanderkandi union under the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Tabiya, 13, daughter of Shamim Miah, Ayesha, 9, and Jannat, 8, daughters of Rubel Miah and Sumaiya, 10, daughter of Billal Miah. They were students of Gausia Noore Madina Mahila Madrasa in the Barkanda area.
The incident was confirmed by Nazmul Hasan, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Raipura Police Station.
According to the relatives of the minors, six children went for a bath together in a nearby canal during a class break, close to the madrasa. After a while, two of them managed to get back to the bank and informed the locals that the others could not be traced. Locals then went to the canal, took the four out of water and rushed three of them to the upazila health complex.
Dr. Ashrafur Rahman, a physician at the emergency department of the health complex, said that three children were brought dead to the hospital around 1:00 PM. The body of the fourth child had already been taken home by the family from the canal spot.
OC Nazmul Hasan said that subsequent necessary measures would be taken following discussions with the families of the deceased.
