The vehicle maintenance allowance for privileged government officials is set to remain at 50,000 taka.
Officials from the Ministry of Public Administration confirmed the matter to Agamir Somoy.
On Monday, the Ministry of Finance indicated 50 per cent cut in vehicle maintenance allowance to 25,000 taka as part of the government's austerity policy. However, the responsibility of determining how to implement this decision was left to the Ministry of Public Administration.
After discussing the matter with the administrative ministries of the privileged officials, the Ministry of Public Administration made a policy decision that reducing the vehicle maintenance allowance would have a negative impact on the administration. In support of their argument, they stated that vehicle maintenance costs have actually increased. The average expenditure per vehicle is 56,000 taka. Under these circumstances, reducing the allowance instead of increasing it would not yield any positive results.
