The sound of a two-month-old baby crying could be heard from inside a locked room. Receiving no response despite repeated calls, relatives and neighbors broke down the door. Inside, they found the infant crying on the bed, with the lifeless bodies of his parents lying right beside him.
Police recovered the two bodies this (Thursday) morning from the house in Purba Rajair village under Sharankhola upazila of Bagerhat. The deceased were identified as Kabir Howlader, 35, and his wife Halima Begum, 28. The matter was confirmed by Rokeya Khanam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sharankhola Police Station.
According to relatives and locals, the couple has two children. Last night, Wednesday, their six-year-old daughter was sleeping with her grandmother. In the morning, relatives went to check on the couple after hearing the two-month-old boy crying inside their room. Hearing the commotion, neighbors gathered at the spot. At one point, the door was broken open, and Kabir and Halima were found lifeless.
Police arrived at the scene and sent the bodies to the Bagerhat District Hospital for autopsy.
According to relatives, Kabir earned a living by catching fish. Due to poverty, quarrels were frequent between the husband and wife. They suspect that Kabir might have killed his wife before committing suicide following such a dispute.
OC Rokeya said that a note was also found beside the bodies. It read, "No one is responsible for the death." An investigation into the incident is underway, and an unnatural death case has been filed at the police station, the OC added.
