Dhaka North City Corporation’s (DNCC) former Mayor Atiqul Islam introduced a time-based waste clearance system for post-Qurbani waste removal, which has now become a practice in both city corporations. Continuing the same system this year, the two Dhaka city corporations set specific deadlines, 12 hours for the North City Corporation administrator and 8 hours for the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) administrator. A look at Dhaka’s streets on Friday showed visible and satisfactory results within the set timeframe.
Waste removal operations began immediately after Eid-ul-Azha on Thursday. However, waste remained visible on several streets of the capital in the morning, including Wapda Road in Rampura, various areas in Mirpur, Gendaria, and Dayaganj. These areas continued to show waste accumulation until midday. By the afternoon, however, city corporation sanitation workers cleared the waste, bringing relief to residents.
Residents of Wapda Road said the waste was removed shortly after noon, which reduced foul odor this year compared to previous years and improved the overall speed of cleanup operations.
Ibrahim Mia, a resident of Wapda Road, told Agamir Somoy that sanitation workers removed the Qurbani waste shortly after noon, resulting in less odor this time. He added that waste clearance was faster compared to last year.
However, while many praised the speed of waste removal, some residents emphasized continuity of work over fixed deadlines. Another resident of the same area, Akira Rahman, said post-Qurbani waste should be removed quickly, but setting a fixed time limit is not necessary. She noted that clearance time may vary depending on the volume of waste in different areas.
Thousands of sanitation workers and officials from both city corporations worked tirelessly to meet the deadline for waste removal. According to data available until 6 pm on Friday, Dhaka South City Corporation transported a total of 19,641 tons of Qurbani waste to the Matuail landfill for final dumping. Meanwhile, Dhaka North City Corporation had dumped 11,471 tons of waste by 2 pm.
Due to strict monitoring by city administrators, relentless efforts by sanitation workers, and logistical support, Dhaka residents received a relatively clean and odor-free city the day after Eid. Authorities have expressed hope of further improving the speed and efficiency of waste management in the future.
