Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obaed Islam has said that at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will highlight the country’s national interests under the government’s “Bangladesh First” foreign policy.

The state minister said this year’s General Assembly session is extremely important for Bangladesh. She said it represents a new journey, new possibilities and new aspirations.

She made the remarks on Saturday afternoon after a rally organized by the BNP’s Nagarkanda upazila unit to mark the founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

The state minister said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is attending the United Nations General Assembly session for the first time after the formation of the new democratic government. Under the government’s “Bangladesh First” foreign policy, the prime minister will present Bangladesh to the international community as a democratic, confident, responsible and promising state.

Shama Obaed said this year’s session carries additional significance for Bangladesh because Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman will preside over the General Assembly session.

At the event, she said, “The opposition has started a long march because it has found no issue for a movement. They themselves know that there is no problem in the country.”

She also questioned the opposition, saying, “Do cars run on fuel or water? The opposition says there is no fuel in the country. Then how are they carrying out such a large long march with thousands of vehicles?” She urged them to come to parliament and speak instead of spreading such confusion.

The foreign affairs minister planted saplings at the MN Academy School field in Nagarkanda upazila to mark the 48th founding anniversary of the BNP. Later, she released fish fry into the Kumar River.

Among others present were district BNP Joint Convener Khandaker Fazlul Haque Tulu, former Acting President of Nagarkanda Upazila BNP Habibur Rahman Babul Talukdar, former General Secretary Saifur Rahman Mukul, former central Jubo Dal leader Hafez Sharif and district Jubo Dal Joint General Secretary Tayebur Rahman.
