Every year on September 5, a scene from the popular Bollywood film ‘3 Idiots’ goes viral again on social media. The date ‘September 5’ written on a concrete wall on the film’s campus has long intrigued moviegoers. Behind the date are not only Chatur Ramalingam’s famous challenge but also the history of Teachers’ Day in India.
Released in 2009 and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, ‘3 Idiots’ featured Omi Vaidya as Chatur Ramalingam, known as ‘Silencer.’ The character represented rote learning and blind competition.
During a Teachers’ Day event, Chatur memorizes and attempts to deliver a lengthy speech in Hindi to impress Dean Virus. However, Rancho changes several words in the speech as part of his plan. Chatur is then left embarrassed in front of the entire auditorium.
After the incident, Chatur challenges Rancho and his friends to return to the campus on the same day, September 5, 10 years later. To preserve the memory of that promise, he writes the date on the university wall. Since then, September 5 has become a symbolic moment for viewers of the film.
The choice of September 5 in the film also carries significance. In India, Teachers’ Day is observed every year on September 5 to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the first Vice President and second President of independent India.
After taking office as president in 1962, students wanted to celebrate his birthday. Instead, he asked them to observe the day as Teachers’ Day rather than celebrate his personal birthday. That tradition continues to be followed at educational institutions across India.
According to film analysts, the scene in ‘3 Idiots’ was not created merely for humor. Rather, it serves as a powerful symbol of rote based education, marks driven competition and the lack of creativity.
Nearly 17 years after the film’s release, the image of the wall and the scene featuring ‘Silencer’ once again become subjects of discussion on social media every September 5. As a result, an ordinary date has gone beyond the film itself and become one of the symbols of discussions about the education system.
