A Chinese national and a 64-year-old Nepali woman were rescued alive on Saturday after being trapped for 10 days following a devastating flash flood and landslide in an area along the Nepal China border.

According to a report by the Kathmandu Post, the Chinese national named Lu Haitao was rescued from about 225 meters or 738 feet inside a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli 1 Hydropower Project. A joint team comprising the Nepali Army and foreign rescuers carried out the rescue. He was later taken for a medical examination.

The search operation is continuing to rescue others believed to be trapped at the Upper Trishuli 1 project. Two people were also rescued alive from the Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project on Friday.

Meanwhile, 64-year-old Chandika Kumari Shrestha was rescued unconscious from a house buried under debris in Ward 10 of Bidur Municipality on Saturday. A nine-member team from the Armed Police Force rescued her. She was later taken by helicopter to the Maithili Barracks in Trishuli operated by the Nepali Army for medical treatment.

On August 26, a glacier broke apart at an altitude of about 5,200 meters or 17,060 feet on Langtang Lirung Mountain in Nepal. This caused a massive avalanche of ice and rocks which later turned into a devastating debris flow. The flow descended through several valleys along the border and caused widespread destruction.

The flash flood and landslide affected extensive areas of Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Kavre districts as well as the Kathmandu Valley. In the same disaster, the Gyirong border crossing in China's Xizang region was also buried under debris.

According to government data, the death toll from the flash flood and landslide had risen to 1,375 as of Saturday. Ten days after the disaster, 5,531 people are still missing.
