Six Bangladeshis, including a child, were detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) while attempting to enter India illegally through the Muruichhara border in Kulaura, Moulvibazar. They were later handed over to Kulaura Police Station. A case has been filed against five of them under the Passport Act, excluding the child.
They were sent to a Moulvibazar court on Thursday after the completion of necessary legal procedures.
The detainees are Hemanta Ghosh, 31, son of late Bishwanath Ghosh of Debhata in Satkhira; Sima Biswas (29), wife of Hemanta Ghosh of Kalia in Narail; Romena Khanam (36), daughter of Bakhtiar Rahman of Kalia; Shrabani Akter (24), wife of Hriday Khan of Shibalaya in Manikganj; and Sajeda Begum (30), wife of late Jahangir Shikdar of Haimchar in Chandpur. A child accompanying them was also detained by the BGB, but no case was filed against the child.
According to the BGB, with the assistance of local brokers, they attempted to enter India through the area adjacent to border pillar No. 1841 near Ichhachhara Punji in Kulaura at around 11 am on Wednesday. A patrol team from the Muruichhara Camp of BGB Battalion 46 detained them at the time. However, the brokers fled after sensing the presence of the BGB. The detainees were later handed over to Kulaura Police Station at around 8 pm on Wednesday.
The complainant in the case is Nayek Subedar Akhtar Hossain, commander of the Muruichhara BGB Camp. He said that during preliminary questioning, the five men and women said they had wanted to go to India in search of work.
Officer-in-Charge of Kulaura Police Station Sheikh Zahirul Islam said, “The five were shown arrested in the case filed by the BGB and were sent to court on Thursday after the completion of necessary legal procedures.”
