Acting DMP Commissioner Md. Sarwar has said there are no significant top-tier terrorists currently in the country. Those who exist are merely associates of former top terrorists or are trying to pose as such.
His comments came while responding to journalists' questions during the inauguration of a police camp in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar, today (Saturday).
When asked about the list of top terrorists, Md. Sarwar stated, "Our list is constantly being updated. Our monitoring, observation, and necessary measures are all in place and are being modernized."
The Commissioner assured the public that there is "nothing to worry about" regarding law and order. "Regardless of the methods, we will subdue those who are using the names of top terrorists or attempting to rise to prominence before they can establish a foothold."
According to the DMP Commissioner, the camp was established specifically to bring crime rate at Karwan Bazar area to zero. Local businessmen can file complaints at this camp either secretly or publicly, and action will be taken accordingly. Twenty personnel will be stationed at the camp, supported by the Detective Branch (DB) and other police agencies.
A special operation is currently underway in the capital to apprehend extortionists and all types of criminals. Hinting that relief would come soon, he the Commissioner said, "We will be able to provide comfort to those involved in trade and commerce. As a result, we hope this will impact commodity prices and lead to a decrease in the cost of goods."
Regarding allegations of police reluctance to file cases at stations, Md. Sarwar said, "The job of the police station is to record cases. If a case is not accepted, we have 24 Zonal Assistant Commissioner (AC) offices; you should go there. We also have Deputy Commissioners (DC) for our eight crime divisions. You can file complaints or contact them there."
He was also asked about police personnel becoming involved in criminal activities. "There is no scope for the police to be involved in crime. Nevertheless, if someone is involved 'secretly or otherwise,' departmental and legal action will be taken. Even if we receive a verbal complaint against a police member, it will be investigated and action will be taken."
Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) S.N. Md. Nazrul Islam and Additional Commissioner (DB) Md. Shafiqul Islam were also present during the event.
