Justice Habibul Gani appointed to appellate division

Justice Md. Habibul Gani of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court has been appointed as a judge of the Appellate Division. The President made the appointment on Thursday under Article 95(1) of the Constitution.

The Ministry of Law issued a notification on the matter on Thursday. The notification said the appointment of Justice Habibul Gani will take effect from the day he takes his oath.

Meanwhile, Supreme Court Registrar General Muhammad Habibur Rahman Siddiqui said in a separate notification on Thursday that the oath taking ceremony of Justice Habibul Gani will be held on the morning of August 30. The Chief Justice will administer the oath to him at the Supreme Court Judges’ Lounge.

Justice Habibul Gani obtained a Master of Social Science (MSS) degree and an LLB degree in law from the University of Chittagong. He was enrolled as a lawyer at the district courts on April 3, 1989 and at the High Court Division of the Supreme Court on April 11, 1992.

Habibul Gani was later appointed as an additional judge of the High Court Division on April 18, 2010. Two years later, on April 15, 2012, he was made a permanent judge of the same division. As part of this progression, he has now been appointed to the Appellate Division. With his appointment, the number of judges in the Appellate Division including the Chief Justice has increased to five.

Under the Bangladesh Supreme Court Judges (Remuneration and Privileges) Act, 2021, judges of the Appellate Division receive a monthly salary of Tk 110,000. In addition, they receive a special allowance equivalent to 50 percent of their monthly salary. They also receive other allowances and benefits including one month’s leave for rest and recreation every three years with one month’s salary.
