False video spreads amid Nepal floods

Sudden floods have caused devastation in Nepal. More than 350 people have died while over 1,500 remain missing. Amid the disaster, misinformation continues to spread on social media.

A video showing flooding and landslides is being circulated with claims that it depicts the current flash floods in Nepal. However, an investigation shows that the video is not from Nepal. It shows a flash flood that occurred last year in Uttarkashi district of India’s Uttarakhand state. What is being claimed?

Yesterday and today, the 1 minute and 47 second video was uploaded to several Facebook profiles.

The video shows a vast residential area being swept away by mountain runoff along with nearby homes.

Some video posts carried captions claiming that eyewitnesses had warned people to “Run, run” before the flash floods in Nepal.

Another caption read, “How many hundreds of people could not even understand how close death was. Eyewitnesses warned people to ‘Run, run’ before the sudden floods in Nepal. O Allah, protect the people of Nepal.”

As of Thursday, when this report was written, the video had been shared 164 times from a Facebook account named “dhakawatch24” and had received 305 reactions. What is the actual incident?

A reverse image search found the video on an Instagram page named himbus.hp on August 5, 2025. The caption of the video said it showed a cloudburst in an area of India.

A keyword search then found a report published by The Times of India on the same date about the incident. A portion of the footage in that report matches the circulated video.

The report said that Dharali village in the Kheer Ganga Valley of Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand, India, was wiped out by a flash flood caused by a cloudburst.

This proves that although many videos related to the sudden floods in Nepal are circulating on social media, this particular video is neither from the current disaster nor from Nepal.
