A Dhaka court on Wednesday granted a two-day remand for actor Zaher Alvi, also known as Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, in a case accusing him of abetting the suicide of his wife, Afra Ivnath Khan Ikra.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al Biruni Mir issued the order after a hearing and also rejected Alvi’s petition for bail.
According to court sources, Alvi was produced before the court from jail. The investigation officer, Inspector Abdul Malek of the Detective Branch’s Mirpur Zonal Team, sought a 10-day remand, citing the need for further investigation. Prosecutor Harun Ur Rashid argued in favor of the remand request.
Defense lawyers sought cancellation of the remand request and applied for bail. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court approved a two-day remand.
Earlier, on June 18, Alvi surrendered before the court. His bail petition was denied, and he was sent to jail. On June 21, the investigating officer filed a petition seeking a 10-day remand. The court later scheduled the remand hearing for June 24.
According to the case statement, Afra Ivnath Khan Ikra was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf wrapped around her neck at her residence in Mirpur DOHS on Feb. 28. She was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.
On the night of the incident, Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case with Pallabi Police Station. The complaint alleged that prolonged family disputes and various forms of abuse had driven Ikra to take her own life.
Zaher Alvi and Afra Evinath Ikra were married in 2010 and had one son.
