A leader of the now-banned Jubo League (Youth League) has died within 19 hours of his arrest in Chattogram. He was identified as Nurul Alam. Police claim he was healthy at the time of arrest. Prison authorities state that he died due to a respiratory illness.
He was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) this Wednesday morning in an ill condition, where doctors declared him dead.
The deceased, Nurul Alam, was the son of the late Ebar Hossain of North Dhemsha village under Dhemsha Union in Satkania Upazila, Chattogram. He was 35 years old. He served as the joint convener of the Dhemsha Union Jubo League.
According to prison authorities, he was taken to the jail on Tuesday at 6:22 PM to be produced before a court as warranted in a case filed at the Satkania police station. He was kept in Ward No. 4 named Surya Sen. Around 6:45 AM on Wednesday, during the prisoner count, he informed the jailor that he was feeling unwell.
After initial treatment at the prison hospital, he was taken to CMCH at 7:31 AM. Following examinations in the emergency department, doctors declared him dead at 7:50 AM. The death certificate noted that he had died before being brought to the hospital.
Syed Shah Sharif, the jailor of Chattogram Central Jail, said that after the prisoner felt ill, he was first taken to the prison hospital. There, doctors said he was suffering from breathing difficulties. He was then taken to CMCH for advanced treatment, but he died on the way.
It is known that on Tuesday around 1:00 PM, a team of the District Detective Branch (DB) arrested Nurul Alam from his home and handed him over to Satkania police station. The police later produced him in court, showing his arrest in a case filed under charges of assault, beating, attempted murder, and the Explosives Act related to the July uprising in 2024.
However, his name was not cited in the First Information Report (FIR) of that case. He was shown as arrested based on investigations conducted against unidentified accused. He was arrested on June 23 during a special police operation to curb terrorism and sabotage ahead of the Awami League's founding anniversary.
Satkania Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Jahangir Alam said there was no prior criminal record against Nurul Alam. He said, "The DB team arrested him and handed him over to the station. We produced him in court showing his arrest in a case. The court ordered him to be sent to jail."
Mohammad Ibrahim, Additional Police Superintendent (DB) of Chattogram, said Nurul Alam was completely healthy at the time of arrest. He said, "He was completely healthy when we arrested him and was handed him over to the police station. We have pictures and videos related to this. He also took photos cheerfully and in good health at the court. His family members posted those pictures on Facebook."
Regarding the arrest even though he was not an accused in a specific case, DB officer Ibrahim said the police station produced him in court showing his arrest in a specific case.
