A customs officer, Bullet Bairagi (35), who was returning to his home in Comilla after training in Chattogram, spoke with his family members after reaching a nearby area. Shortly after, his mobile phone was switched off. His body was later found in the morning beside a highway, with his face bloodied.
Police recovered the body on Saturday from beside the Dhaka–Chattogram highway near the Irish Hill Hotel area in Kotbari, Comilla. Around 1 p.m., family members went to the highway police station and identified the deceased.
The deceased, Bullet Bairagi, was from Tungipara, Gopalganj. He worked as an assistant revenue officer in the Customs, Excise and VAT department. He lived in a rented house in Rajganj Panpatti area of Comilla for work. He had a 9-month-old daughter.
His mother, Nilima Bairagi, said Bullet Bairagi was her only son. He was appointed as a customs officer under the non-cadre post through the 41st BCS. He joined the 44th foundation training on April 11 and went to Chattogram. On Friday night, after completing his training, he boarded a Dhaka-bound bus around 11 p.m. from Chattogram. He last spoke with his family at 2:25 a.m., informing them that he would get off at Padua Bazar in Comilla and return home to Rajganj Panpatti.
“My son was supposed to get off at Padua Bazar, but his body was found in Kotbari. He was not supposed to go there. This is a murder,” his mother claimed.
The family also said that unknown individuals spoke to him several times on his mobile phone after 2:30 a.m. After that, his phone remained switched off.
Police recovered the body and sent it for autopsy. The cause of death will be confirmed after the report is received, said Mominul Haque, officer-in-charge of Moinamoti Highway Crossing Police Station.
