While people across Bangladesh remain busy celebrating Eid with their families, members of Border Guard Bangladesh continue to stand guard under the scorching sun and heavy rain to protect the border. On the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, BGB has maintained maximum alert along the Brahmanbaria border to prevent the smuggling of sacrificial animal hides and illegal push-ins through the frontier.
From Thursday morning, Lieutenant Colonel Jabbar Ahmed, commanding officer of BGB’s 25 Battalion, personally inspected several border areas in Akhaura upazila. Authorities said the strict surveillance and heightened alert along the border will continue for the next several days mainly to prevent hide smuggling.
Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura, Bijoynagar and Kasba upazilas share an approximately 73-kilometer border with India. Every year during Eid-ul-Azha, smugglers become active in using this vast border route to smuggle sacrificial animal hides into India. BGB has adopted the additional security measures this year to ensure they do not get that opportunity.
Lieutenant Colonel Jabbar Ahmed, commanding officer of the 25 Battalion, said BGB members have taken a strict position along the border to stop all kinds of illegal push-ins from India, prevent the smuggling of sacrificial animal hides and curb the trafficking of drugs and other goods. He said BGB personnel continue to work tirelessly even on Eid day so people across the country can celebrate the festival peacefully and without concern.
Alongside border protection, BGB has also focused on ensuring a safe and hassle-free return journey for people heading back after the Eid holidays. To support this effort, authorities have deployed additional BGB personnel at several key points along the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway.
