Four members of an indigenous community lost their lives while trying to rescue a goat that had fallen into an abandoned septic tank in Madhupur Upazila of Tangail district.
The incident occurred around 9:30 am today (Saturday) in the Telki Jalai village of the upazila.
The deceased have been identified as Gabriel Nokrek (45), Ratan Nokrek (25), Bablu Hadima (35), and Neimar Mro (10). All of them were residents of Jalai village in Madhupur Upazila.
These details were confirmed by A.K.M. Fazlur Haque, Officer-in-Charge of Madhupur Police Station.
Locals said that this morning, a goat fell into an abandoned septic tank. To rescue the goat, Gabriel Nokrek first climbed down into the tank. After a while, when no response was heard from him, three others entered the tank one by one to rescue him. However, they too did not come back out.
On receiving the news, a team from Madhupur Fire Service arrived at the scene and recovered the bodies of the four from the tank.
Citing fire service officials, OC Fazlur Haque said it is believed that they died from suffocation due to toxic gases accumulated inside the abandoned septic tank. However, the actual cause of death will be confirmed after an investigation. Legal action is underway in connection with the incident.
