USA national team continues to build massive momentum in the FIFA World Cup 2026, securing a spot in the Round 32 after a commanding 2-0 win against Australia at a sun-drenched Seattle stadium.
Under the tactical leadership of Mauricio Pochettino, the co-hosts achieved back-to-back World Cup victories for the first time since the tournament’s inaugural edition in 1930.
The Americans entered the match without star playmaker Christian Pulisic, who remained sidelined with a calf injury. Despite his absence, the US squad overwhelmed Tony Popovic’s Socceroos with a relentless high-energy press from the opening whistle.
The breakthrough arrived in the 11th minute through an electric surge from Folarin Balogun. Balogun drove into the left side of the box and fired a low cross that Australian defender Cameron Burgess accidentally diverted into his own net.
The Stars and Stripes extended their advantage in the 43rd minute following a stroke of luck and sharp positioning. A shot from Sergino Dest took a deflection and looped high into the six-yard box.
Alex Freeman, the son of a Super Bowl champion, reacted quickest to the dropping ball, beating goalkeeper Patrick Beach to nod home a crucial second goal.
Australia struggled to break through the American lines, and while Alessandro Circati made a vital block to deny Balogun a third goal, the match remained firmly in US control. The victory marks a significant defensive milestone for the co-hosts, who earned their first clean sheet in ten matches.
With this result, the USA is guaranteed a place in the knockout rounds as at least one of the best third-placed teams, having secured passage with one group game still remaining.
