Meeting between Chattogram Chamber leaders and Alibaba representatives held at the World Trade Center — Collected report
The Chattogram Chamber of Commerce has called for opportunities to sell Bangladeshi products on global retail giant Alibaba and urged the establishment of a large bonded warehouse at the proposed free trade zone in Anwara. Alibaba representatives reportedly responded positively to the proposal.
The discussion took place on Saturday at the World Trade Center in Chattogram during a meeting between Chamber leaders and Alibaba representatives.
Alibaba, one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms, connects more than 50 million buyers globally and works with over 200,000 suppliers, facilitating transactions worth trillions of dollars. A significant number of Bangladeshi buyers are already active on the platform.
Chattogram Chamber President Mohammad Amirul Haque said the delegation successfully conveyed that many Bangladeshi products are suitable for sale on Alibaba and should be integrated into the platform for global distribution.
He added that Bangladesh is currently at a critical stage of economic transformation. The government is working to expand trade, attract foreign investment, and improve export competitiveness through initiatives such as the proposed free trade zone and the Chinese Economic Zone in Anwara, Chattogram. He expressed ambition to increase exports from Bangladesh to China from $1 billion to $5 billion within the next two years, emphasizing the need for stronger Chinese cooperation.
Alibaba General Manager Gawa Samar said the company is focusing on expanding its business in Bangladesh by targeting its large population base. He noted that beyond the ready-made garment sector, Alibaba is working to diversify export products and bring small entrepreneurs into its platform.
Former Chattogram Chamber President Amir Humayun Mahmud Chowdhury also called for Alibaba’s support in enhancing the capacity of young Bangladeshi entrepreneurs through e-commerce and AI training initiatives.
Senior Vice President Amjad Hossain Chowdhury, Vice President Mashiul Alam Swapon, and other directors were also present at the event.
