A total of Tk 2.96 crore was collected in toll revenue from the Jamuna Bridge over the past 24 hours as holidaymakers travel home ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
With Eid approaching, pressure on the Dhaka–Tangail Highway and the Jamuna Bridge corridor has increased as people from northern Bangladesh head home. The rush has intensified further due to the closure of garment factories in Gazipur, adding to the flow of returning workers.
Bridge authorities said vehicle movement across the Jamuna Bridge has nearly doubled compared to normal days. Despite the heavy traffic, officials reported no major congestion, and vehicles are moving at a steady pace.
A visit on Sunday to key points along the Dhaka–Tangail Highway, including Elenga, Rabna Bypass, Nagar Jalpai, and Korotia Bypass, showed a steady flow of vehicles.
According to Tangail district police, the Jamuna Bridge–Dhaka–Tangail highway becomes extremely busy during Eid holidays, as it serves as the main gateway for traffic to 23 northern districts. As a result, vehicle pressure increases several times over normal conditions.
To ensure safe and smooth travel during the Eid journey, around 800 police personnel have been deployed across major highways in the district. They are working to manage traffic, prevent accidents, and ensure the smooth movement of cattle-laden trucks and other vehicles.
Between Friday midnight and Saturday midnight, a total of 32,649 vehicles crossed the bridge in 24 hours.
A total of 16,753 vehicles crossed toward northern Bangladesh through the Jamuna Bridge, generating Tk 1.49 crore in toll revenue, while 15,896 vehicles traveled toward Dhaka via the western end, contributing Tk 1.47 crore in tolls.
In total, 32,649 vehicles crossed the bridge within 24 hours as Eid travel pressure continues to build.
Syed Riaz Uddin, Executive Engineer at the Jamuna Bridge site office, said vehicle pressure is steadily increasing ahead of Eid. To manage the surge and speed up toll collection, authorities have introduced 18 toll booths, including four dedicated booths for motorcycles (two on each side).
Tangail Superintendent of Police Md. Shamsul Alam Government said more than 800 police personnel have been deployed along the Tangail section of the highway to ease traffic congestion. In addition to traffic police, district police, highway police, and other law enforcement agencies are working in coordination.
He added that measures have been taken to control slow-moving vehicles and prevent illegal parking to reduce the risk of accidents. Seven recovery (tow) trucks have been kept ready at different points to quickly remove broken-down or accident-involved vehicles.
The police chief expressed hope that with coordinated efforts from all agencies, no major traffic congestion will develop on the highway during the Eid travel period.
