U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most vital waterways for global trade, will be permanently free of tolls or tariffs under the upcoming agreement with Iran, set to take place on Friday in Switzerland.
He made these remarks in an interview with The New York Times on Sunday afternoon local time.
Trump stated that the agreement with Iran would keep the Strait of Hormuz permanently free of tariffs.
During a 28-minute phone conversation with the media outlet, Donald Trump further said that if Iran fails to reach a final nuclear deal with the United States, he would resume military strikes.
Trump claimed that he would make the U.S. the guardian of the Middle East in exchange for one-fifth of the region's revenue.
During the phone call, he remained steadfast in his earlier assertion that his decision to attack Iran in February and the subsequent naval blockade of the country's ports had reshaped the Middle East in America's favor.
