Youth killed in shooting in Khulna, police fail to catch attackers despite chase

A youth was killed in a shooting in front of a local office of the banned Awami League in Daulatpur, Khulna.
The incident occurred at around 8:15 am on Saturday in front of Ispahani Jute Press Colony on the Khulna-Jashore highway in Daulatpur, according to police and local residents.
The deceased was identified as Jalil Munshi (35). He was the son of Dilu Munshi of the area.
Locals said Jalil was walking past the Kuli Bagan Awami League office at around 8:15 am when three assailants arrived on a motorcycle and shot him before fleeing.
Jalil fell to the ground immediately after being shot. He died on the way to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Daulatpur Police Station Officer in Charge A F M Zahidul Islam said, “There are wounds on the upper right side of Jalil’s chest and on the left side of his back. However, it cannot be said at this moment whether he was hit by one or two bullets.”
The OC said a police patrol team chased the attackers.
He said members of a plainclothes team from Daulatpur Police Station were positioned near the scene. When they gave chase, the attackers fled.
According to the OC, there were three attackers. One was identified as Md Russell alias Pichchi Russell (32), from Madhyadangga in Daulatpur Police Station area. Another was identified as Asif Molla (25). The identity of the third attacker could not be established.
Asif and the unidentified youth fled on the motorcycle. Russell took shelter in a nearby slum with a pistol, the OC said.
He said Russell had been in jail and was released on bail 15 days ago.
Police could not immediately say why Jalil was attacked. The OC said police were conducting an operation to arrest the attackers.
