Prime Minister Tarique Rahman chairs a meeting on road management under the Dhaka South City Corporation at the Secretariat on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held a meeting on infrastructure development projects aimed at easing traffic congestion in the capital through the effective use of circular roads and waterways.
The meeting on road management under Dhaka South City Corporation took place on Wednesday afternoon at the Cabinet Division conference room at the Secretariat. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman presided over the meeting.
Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Hasan Shiplu provided the information. “The meeting presented in detail how this project will help reduce traffic congestion in the capital. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was also briefed on the latest progress of the Inner Circular Ring Road project in Dhaka,” he said.
Dhaka’s Inner Circular Ring Road extends from Gabtoli to Babubazar and from Postogola to Demra. Construction is currently underway on the 12-kilometer project in the Rayerbazar, Hazaribagh, and Kamrangirchar sections. Officials informed the meeting that 45 percent of the work has been completed.
Once the circular ring road is completed, travelers heading to Dhaka-Sylhet, Dhaka-Mawa, and Dhaka-Chattogram routes will no longer need to use roads inside Dhaka city. This will reduce pressure on city roads and help ease traffic congestion.
Dhaka also has a 110-kilometer waterway network surrounding the city. If authorities fully utilize it, the roads will face less traffic pressure, and people will be able to travel easily between destinations using the circular water route. Experts presented these issues and their technical aspects during the meeting. They said the use of waterways would reduce environmental pollution, save fuel, and shorten travel times because the vessels operating on the routes would be electric-powered.
Those attending the meeting included Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, Local Government Division Secretary Shahidul Hasan, Road Transport Secretary Ziaul Haque, Shipping Secretary Md. Zakaria, Railways Secretary Fahmidul Islam, BIWTA Chairman Mahidul Islam, Dhaka South City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Zahirul Islam, Chief Engineer Nur Azizur Rahman, Additional Chief Engineer Kazi Md. Borhan Uddin, Supervising Engineer Mithun Chandra Shil, and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology professors Khan Mahmud Amanat and Md. Hadiuzzaman.
