‘Bangladesh First’ policy to decide Mecca Agreement: Shama

State Minister of Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed said “Bangladesh First” policy will be followed regarding participation in the Mecca Agreement.

She made these remarks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday. She added that Bangladesh will perform scrutiny before deciding to join the agreement.

Regarding joining the Mecca Agreement, Shama noted, “We follow the ‘Bangladesh First’ policy before participating in any multilateral forum. The government will decide by scrutinizing what benefits Bangladesh will gain and what the people will profit if we join here. We have not received anything official yet. However, this is open, let’s see.”

Prior to this, she held a meeting with a delegation led by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary General Anda Filip. IPU welcomed the resumption of democracy in Bangladesh.

Shama informed that they discussed the development of parliamentary democracy, enhancing institutional capacity, and strengthening parliamentary diplomacy. The organization views the presence of a young parliament as a positive sign.

Moreover, she said discussions were held on resolving the Rohingya crisis and mobilizing the support of international parliamentary forums to address climate risks.
