What Salary Will Be Paid in Which Grade

The long wait for government employees is about to end, as the outline of the 9th Pay Scale is now on the verge of finalization.

In the new structure, the basic salary in the lowest grade (20th grade) is being increased by 145% to 20,000 taka. On the other hand, a proposal has been made to increase the salary in the highest grade (1st grade) by 100% to 156,000 taka.

According to Ministry of Finance sources, this proposal has been placed at today's cabinet meeting. The cabinet meeting is still ongoing.

The source said the 9th Pay Scale will be implemented in three phases. The phases will be rolled out from July 1, 2026, to 2027.

It has long been said that the salary structure for government employees would be implemented in two phases. Furthermore, the Ministry of Finance has prepared the report assuming that all types of allowances will take effect from January 1, 2028.

Sources say there has been a positive discussion in the cabinet regarding the proposed structure, and an official notification on this matter may be issued very soon.

Key Figures of the Salary Increase

Lowest grade (20th grade): The current basic salary of 8,250 taka is being increased by 145% to 20,000 taka.

Highest grade (1st grade): The current basic salary of 78,000 taka is proposed to be increased by 100% to 156,000 taka.

Intermediate grades: For the other grades between 1 and 20, proportional salary increases have been proposed, taking inflation and the cost of living into account.

Once this outline presented to the cabinet is finalized, the process of issuing a notification from the Finance Division will begin.

Discussion on the Impact

Economists and stakeholders say this salary increase will bring significant relief to low and middle-income government employees who are currently struggling under the pressure of inflation in the market.

Due to the long-standing rise in the cost of living, it had become difficult to manage with the fixed salary. With this government step, the financial security of government employees is expected to increase, along with a boost in work efficiency.

Although this new structure will increase regular expenditure in the government's revenue budget, administrative analysts believe it will have a positive impact on improving the quality of public services.

However, there is also discussion that if the salary increase for approximately 2 million government employees fuels inflation, it could put significant pressure on the private and informal sectors.
