Bangladesh Bank’s net profit rises to Tk 26,000 crore

Bangladesh Bank logged a massive profit in the outgoing 2025-26 fiscal year. The central bank recorded a net profit of Tk 25,900 crore in the last fiscal year, which is Tk 3,280 crore higher than the preceding 2024-25 fiscal year.

In FY 2024-25, the net profit stood at Tk 22,620 crore. Meanwhile, in FY 2023-24, the central bank’s net profit was Tk 15,300 crore.

The financial statement for the last fiscal year was approved during a Bangladesh Bank Board of Directors meeting on Sunday.

The board members attended the meeting held at the central bank's conference room, presided over by Governor Mostaqur Rahman. During the meeting, the Board of Directors also approved an incentive bonus equivalent to six basic salaries for central bank employees.

Economists point out that turning a profit is not the primary function of a country's central bank. As a regulatory body, its main duties encompass supervising the banking sector, keeping inflation in check, driving private sector investment, and generating employment. The surge in Bangladesh Bank's profit is largely a byproduct of distress in the economy and the banking sector. However, they cautioned that the central bank must ensure it does not stray from its core objectives while making profits.

Despite an economic slowdown, the central bank's credit management operations remained robust. Amid a liquidity crunch across the banking sector, commercial banks borrowed more funds from Bangladesh Bank than before, boosting its interest income. Additionally, sound investments of foreign exchange reserves in various countries yielded high returns. These combined factors contributed to the sharp growth in the central bank's profits.
