Bangladesh’s Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has described the now-banned Awami League as a 'mafia organization,' warning that strict action will be taken if any attempt is made to create unrest or carry out sabotage.
Speaking at the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Secretariat on Saturday, the minister said authorities suspect the group may attempt to destabilize the country around its June 23 founding anniversary. He said police across the country have been instructed to remain on high alert.
Responding to questions from reporters, Salahuddin Ahmed said maintaining vigilance is the government’s responsibility. He added that there are concerns the organization, which is banned under anti-terrorism laws, could attempt to create instability, and law enforcement agencies will act accordingly.
When asked whether he considers the Awami League a political party, the minister responded: “Politically speaking, the Awami League is not a political party; it is a mafia organization. They may try to create instability in the country, which is why nationwide alert has been issued.”
The minister further stated that law enforcement agencies are closely monitoring the situation. He emphasized that measures have been taken to prevent any disorder or conflict and ensure public order remains stable.
Police, intelligence agencies, and other security forces are working in coordination, he added. Any attempt at sabotage or unrest will be dealt with strictly.
Earlier, ahead of the Awami League’s founding anniversary, Police Headquarters sent an urgent message to all metropolitan police commissioners and range DIG, instructing them to take necessary precautionary and security measures nationwide.
