Voting has ended in the election for the country’s 23rd president. Voting began at 2:10 pm Thursday and continued until 5 pm. Most members of Parliament exercised their voting rights within the first two hours of voting.
However, BNP’s Mirza Abbas, independent lawmaker Rumeen Farhana, expelled Jamaat lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam and Islami Andolan Bangladesh lawmaker Maulana Mahmudul Hossain Oliyullah were not seen casting their votes.
BNP sources said Mirza Abbas, the lawmaker for Dhaka 8, has been receiving medical treatment in Malaysia for a long time due to illness. He did not come to vote because of his illness.
Jamaat expelled Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party on charges of moral misconduct. He has not been seen in public since then.
Meanwhile, Islami Andolan Bangladesh boycotted the presidential election. Maulana Mahmudul Hossain Oliyullah did not vote in line with the party’s decision.
Nothing is known about why the other lawmaker, Rumeen Farhana, did not vote.
Earlier on Thursday, voting began with Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmad casting the first vote. Acting Speaker Kaisar Kamal then cast his vote. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and BNP presidential candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir followed.
