'I carried out society's verdict,' says chairman after beating woman with a shoe

UP Chairman beats up a woman following a village arbitration at Brahmanpara of Cumilla.
In Cumilla, a local Union Parishad chairman, Farid Uddin, beat a woman with shoes during a village arbitration (salish) held over allegations of an extramarital relationship. After a video of the incident went viral, the district administration ordered an investigation.
The incident took place on Monday in Madhabpur Union of Brahmanpara Upazila. The upazila administration launched an inquiry into the matter on Wednesday, confirmed Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Munni Islam.
Local sources said that rumors had spread in the neighbourhood over an extramarital relationship between a young man and the woman in Madhabpur Union. A salish was called on Monday to adjudicate the matter, and a decision was made to punish both individuals.
However, in the viral video, Chairman Farid is seen hitting the woman with shoes while she is made to sit on the ground. No video of the young man has surfaced anywhere. Locals, however, said that the young man was also beaten with shoes.
Madhabpur UP Chairman Farid said, "The woman, who has a husband abroad, engaged in an illicit affair. I merely carried out the verdict of the social court. Some people are circulating the video."
Brahmanpara Police Station OC Md. Faruk Hossain said that they would review the incident and take legal action.
UNO Munni Islam told Ajamir Somoy that following the district administrator's directive, an investigation began today (Wednesday) after the video came to their attention. The accused chairman has been asked to submit a written explanation.
