Chinese President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s development during talks with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Beijing on Friday.
According to the Prime Minister’s Press Wing, Xi Jinping made the pledge during a bilateral meeting held at the Great Hall of the People.
Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir said the two leaders discussed China’s continued support for Bangladesh’s development, with Xi Jinping reiterating Beijing’s commitment to expanding cooperation.
Humayun Kabir described the meeting as unprecedented, saying Prime Minister Tarique Rahman first joined President Xi Jinping in delegation-level talks before the two leaders held a separate one-on-one meeting.
He said the private meeting reflected the importance China places on Bangladesh and demonstrated the Chinese leadership’s positive approach toward both Bangladesh and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
According to Humayun Kabir, the prime minister met President Xi Jinping at 10:45 am local time on the final day of his Beijing visit. The delegation-level meeting lasted about 50 minutes before the leaders held their private discussions.
The talks focused on a range of bilateral issues of mutual interest, including development cooperation and strengthening Bangladesh-China relations.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and President Xi Jinping held formal bilateral talks at the Great Hall of the People, where they discussed cooperation, economic development and other issues of shared interest.
Before the meeting, Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson Mahdi Amin said the prime minister would raise issues related to Bangladesh’s national interests, with the primary objective of further strengthening ties between the two countries.
Ahead of the summit, Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress, paid a courtesy call on the prime minister.
At around 9:30 am local time, the prime minister laid a wreath at the Monument to the People’s Heroes in Tiananmen Square. The national anthems of Bangladesh and China were played, followed by a bugle performance. He then observed a moment of silence in tribute to China’s fallen heroes.
During his visit, the prime minister attended a series of high-level meetings and official events. He is in Beijing on a four-day official visit at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
The visit followed his trip to Malaysia, the first overseas tour of his tenure. He later attended the World Economic Forum’s Summer Davos 2026 in Dalian before traveling to Beijing.
In the presence of the prime ministers of Bangladesh and China, the two countries signed 13 memorandums of understanding. On the same day, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Communist Party of China also signed a separate memorandum of understanding.
Representatives of several major Chinese industrial groups and development organizations also met the prime minister, expressing interest in increasing investment and cooperation in Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to depart Beijing for Dhaka later Friday.
