Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed has said that the force has adopted a coordinated, technology-driven, and multi-layered security plan for Eid prayers and the security of an empty Dhaka.
He said, “A six-tier security arrangement has been put in place at the National Eidgah. In addition, mobile patrols, foot patrols, and motorcycle patrols have been intensified, with special focus on the security of an empty Dhaka. The DMP cyber unit is also continuously monitoring to prevent rumours and misinformation.”
He made the remarks while briefing journalists after inspecting the security arrangements at the National Eidgah ground on Wednesday.
The DMP Commissioner said, “A four to six-layer security ring has been established around the National Eidgah ground. Sweeping teams from the Special Branch (SB) and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) dog squad ‘K-9’ will conduct searches in and around the Eidgah. The entire area and nearby key locations have been brought under CCTV surveillance, and monitoring will continue round the clock from a temporary DMP control room.”
All entry points to the Eidgah will have archways, handheld metal detectors, and manual frisking. Picketing and queue management systems will be in place around the venue. Special search and barricade arrangements have been set up at the three main entry points to the National Eidgah, those are Matsya Bhaban Crossing, Press Club area, and High Court Crossing. Watchtowers have also been installed to monitor the situation.
Aerial surveillance will be carried out using drones to monitor the overall situation from above. Alongside uniformed police, members of the Detective Branch (DB) and CTTC will conduct intelligence monitoring in plainclothes. SWAT, the Bomb Disposal Unit, and the Counter Terrorism Unit will remain on standby. Separate prayer arrangements, entry gates, and enhanced security measures have also been put in place for female worshippers.
The Commissioner said, “As a large number of people have left Dhaka during the Eid holidays, many residential and commercial areas in the city have become partially empty. Considering this overall situation, the current security environment, past experience, and potential risks, Dhaka Metropolitan Police has adopted a coordinated, technology-driven, and multi-layered security plan.”
“Due to the exodus during the Eid holidays, special attention has been given to securing empty residential and commercial areas. Mobile patrols, foot patrols, and motorcycle patrols have been strengthened. The situation is being monitored through CCTV. Checkpoints have been set up at key locations. Surveillance has been increased at banks, ATM booths, shopping malls, markets, and other important establishments. Security personnel of residential and commercial buildings and institutions have also been instructed to perform their duties,” he added.
“In the current context, the DMP cyber unit is continuously monitoring social media to prevent rumors, misinformation, and attempts to create confusion. Any form of rumor, provocative propaganda, or attempt to destabilize the law-and-order situation will be dealt strictly,” he said.
He further said, “Police are performing their duties with the highest level of professionalism, sincerity, and vigilance to protect lives and property and ensure a peaceful Eid celebration.”
Additional Police Commissioner (DB) Md. Shafiqul Islam, joint police commissioners, deputy police commissioners, and other officials were present at the time.
