The Appellate Division has upheld the High Court's verdict declaring several provisions introduced by the 15th Amendment to the Constitution, including the abolition of the caretaker government system, illegal. Lawyers stated that as a result of this ruling, the referendum and the caretaker government system have been restored to the constitution.
Today, Thursday (July 9), an Appellate Bench comprising four judges, led by the Chief Justice, announced the verdict at 9:30 AM.
Fifteen years ago, the then Awami League government abolished the caretaker government system and brought about several other changes through the 15th Amendment.
Following the change of government, five prominent citizens, including Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Secretary of Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN), filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking directions to invalidate this amendment. After the final hearing, the High Court delivered its verdict on December 17, 2024, declaring certain parts of the 15th Amendment of the Constitution null and void.
The hearing on separate appeals filed against this High Court verdict began last Monday. Following hearings on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Appellate Division fixed today for the announcement of the verdict.
