Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman has been elected President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
He won the prestigious post for a one-year term by defeating Cyprus’s Special Envoy for Multilateral Affairs, Andreas Kakouris.
The election was held on Tuesday at the United Nations headquarters.
Among the UN member states, 99 countries voted in favor of Bangladesh’s candidate, Khalilur Rahman, while 91 votes were cast for the Cypriot candidate, Andreas S. Kakouris.
With this victory, a representative of Bangladesh will assume the presidency of the UN General Assembly for the second time.
Forty years ago, in 1986, Bangladesh’s former Foreign Secretary and politician Humayun Rashid Chowdhury served as President of the 41st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
