Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry has said that the signing ceremony scheduled for Friday in Switzerland to mark the Iran war settlement has been canceled. It stated that the memorandum of understanding had already been signed electronically. The Guardian reported the development.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mosharraf Zaidi said, “The proposed visit has been postponed because the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has already been signed electronically, has come into effect, and is now in the implementation phase.”
He added that Pakistan will assist in the next stages of discussions at various “technical levels.”
According to Dawn, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said early Thursday that the “Islamabad Memorandum” between the United States and Iran had been signed electronically by both sides.
In a post on social media platform X, he said, “The memorandum has been signed by honourable presidents of both the countries and also endorsed by me as the mediator. The signing of this agreement at the highest level of the respective governments demonstrates the commitment of both sides to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict.”
He further said the memorandum would take effect immediately, with Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz as a first step, while the United States would immediately lift its naval blockade.
US President Donald Trump signed the memorandum during a dinner at the Palace of Versailles after the G7 summit in France. A video released by one of Trump’s aides showed host President Emmanuel Macron and other guests applauding at the time.
As he left the palace, Trump told reporters, “Just signed it.”
Meanwhile, citing Iran’s state news agency IRNA, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the document had been finalized through the signatures of the two presidents.
The Prime Minister’s Office later released a video on X showing Shehbaz Sharif also signing the memorandum as mediator.
Shehbaz’s X post initially stated that, with Qatar’s support, Pakistan would host a formal ceremony scheduled for June 19 in Switzerland to mark the historic development and begin technical-level talks.
However, the post was later revised. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei also told the state television news network that no signing ceremony would take place in Switzerland, as the agreement had already been digitally signed by the two presidents.
The Swiss government said on Thursday that it had planned to host initial talks between the United States and Iran at the mountain resort of Burgenstock in Switzerland.
