Iran's current Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, will not attend the funeral of the country's former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This decision stems from security concerns, according to Ayatollah Prof. Hakim Elahi, the Supreme Leader's representative to India.
According to a report by the news agency ANI, Prof. Hakim Elahi said that making a public appearance could be "dangerous" for Mojtaba due to threats and surveillance risks from Israel.
Ali Khamenei, who ruled Iran for 36 years, was killed on February 28 in a joint US-Israeli attack. This attack triggered the latest war in the Middle East.
The body of the late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was brought to the capital, Tehran, on Thursday night for the final farewell rituals. His week-long farewell ceremonies begin today, Friday.
According to the announced schedule, the farewell rituals for Ali Khamenei will begin today, Friday (July 3), with the participation of heads of state, high-ranking officials, and religious leaders from various countries.
Following this, the farewell ceremony will continue for the general public to pay their tribute in Tehran on July 4 and 5. His main funeral prayer (Janazah) will be held in the capital, Tehran, on July 6.
After the rituals in the capital, Khamenei's remains will be taken to Iran's holy city of Qom on July 7. Following the observance of religious rituals there, his body will be transported to neighboring Iraq on July 8.
Religious and political leaders in Baghdad, Najaf, and Karbala in Iraq will receive Khamenei's body. His funeral rituals will be completed at the major Shia holy sites there.
The week-long rituals will conclude on July 9. He will be buried following the final funeral prayer at the Imam Ali Reza Shrine in Mashhad, one of the most sacred Shia pilgrimage sites in northeastern Iran.
