Hamas announced Monday that it has dissolved its de facto government in Gaza and is prepared to transfer authority to a Palestinian technocratic administration, marking a significant step in efforts to advance the remaining elements of a US-backed peace plan.
The announcement comes as pressure mounts on Israel to implement outstanding provisions of the plan, which has largely stalled. US President Donald Trump proposed the framework after a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect in October.
A key component of the postwar Gaza plan called for dismantling the administrative structure that had overseen government ministries in the territory for more than a decade. Hamas said it has now fulfilled that commitment by dissolving its governing apparatus.
The group said government ministries and the officials appointed to run them will remain in place. It also said it will continue overseeing security and policing operations in areas of Gaza that remain under its control following the US-mediated ceasefire.
The Trump-appointed Board of Peace, which is responsible for monitoring implementation of the peace plan, has formally recorded Hamas’ move.
However, the board said its assessment would ultimately depend on actions rather than pledges.
"Ultimately, our assessment will be guided by actions, not promises, to meet the critical needs of the people of Gaza," the board said.
Israel did not immediately comment on the announcement.
Hamas accused Israel of repeatedly violating the ceasefire and failing to carry out other phases of the peace plan. Under the framework, Israeli forces are expected to withdraw from Gaza once Hamas surrenders its weapons.
