Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss matters of mutual interest.
The meeting and exchange of views took place this Wednesday in Beijing, as confirmed by the Iranian news outlet Mehr News. The news agency reported that the two top officials exchanged perspectives on issues of common concern.
Araghchi's visit to Beijing is part of a broader Iranian diplomatic initiative. Under this framework, he has already held discussions with the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Oman, Russia, and several European nations. The primary objective of these visits is to facilitate efforts to end the conflict between Tehran and Washington.
No further details regarding the discussions were immediately available.
NHK adds: Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's scheduled meeting comes a week after holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Russia on April 27. Analysts say the back-to-back meetings are part of Tehran’s effort to underscore its strong diplomatic ties with both Russia and China.
Ahead of the Iran–China talks, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said on Tuesday that he hopes Beijing will pressure Tehran to reverse its actions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Rubio urged Chinese officials to deliver a firm message to Araghchi, saying Iran’s behavior has left it increasingly isolated and that it should not attempt to “hold the global economy hostage.” He added that it is in China’s own interest for Iran to stop restricting access to the vital shipping route.
The remarks come ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s planned visit to China next week for a U.S.–China summit. Iran is expected to feature prominently in the discussions, as China remains a key supporter of the Iranian economy and the largest buyer of Iranian oil.
Al Jazeera Reports on Why Araghchi's Visit to Beijing is So Significant
International analysts believe the meeting's outcome is a source of concern for both Iran and China, especially given its timing amidst ongoing Middle East conflicts. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Beijing today to meet with his Chinese counterpart, just days before U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit China.
This marks Araghchi’s first visit to China since the start of the war in the Middle East, though he has spoken with the Chinese Foreign Minister by phone at least three times since the conflict began.
According to sources cited by Al Jazeera, the agenda in Beijing will be dominated by two primary issues: maintaining the ceasefire and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran will be closely watching to see if Beijing is willing to make any concessions to Washington, as Trump has been urging China to exert more pressure on Iran to reopen the strait. Conversely, China will seek assurances from Tehran that there are no plans to further escalate the situation.
Analysts suggest this puts Beijing in a complex strategic position. It must balance distancing itself from Iran's actions while maintaining its influence over Tehran, all while signaling to all parties that it remains a reliable partner for peace.
Jodi Wen, a researcher at the Center for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University, believes this visit is exceptionally important. She notes the significance of its timing—occurring during an active conflict with the U.S., a shipping crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, and as Trump prepares for his own visit to China later this month.
