Twin explosions in front of Macron's hotel shake Damascus

Two bomb explosions have occurred in quick succession near a hotel in the Syrian capital, Damascus. French President Emmanuel Macron had spent the night at that very hotel. However, the French President's office said he did not hear the sounds of the explosions and, shortly after, he held a scheduled meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Syrian authorities have reported that at least 18 people were injured in the explosions. This was the first visit to Syria by a European Union head of state since Bashar al-Assad was ousted from power in 2024. The attack overshadowed the visit and brought to the fore the reality that the country's security situation remains unstable.
The two explosions occurred in a busy area between the Syrian Ministry of Tourism and the National Museum, directly opposite the Four Seasons Hotel. A source from Macron's delegation and Syrian security sources stated that he had stayed overnight at that hotel and also held a meeting with civil society representatives there on Tuesday morning.
In a post on X, Macron stated that his Syria visit continues.
He wrote, "Nothing can weaken the Syrian people's aspiration to live in a fully sovereign and secure state. This morning I saw a diverse Syria and witnessed their dignity, courage, and determination."
The first explosion happened shortly after Macron's motorcade had departed for the presidential palace. Reuters video footage showed fire and smoke rising from the blast site. Moments later, a second explosion was captured on camera nearby.
The second explosion occurred next to an ambulance that was standing at the scene, where about two dozen people had gathered. Emergency service workers began working to bring the fire under control. Smoke and fire were also seen near the surrounding shops.
Reuters footage showed Macron's motorcade traveling along the highway toward the presidential palace before the blast. Later, video released by Syrian state media showed him standing beside President Ahmed al-Shara and meeting with other Syrian civilian and military officials.
No individual or group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
