Russian missiles and drones slammed into Kyiv early Monday morning, claiming at least nine lives and leaving 46 others wounded.
This violent assault comes just days after the capital’s deadliest strike of the year.
Rescue teams are scouring the ruins of at least 15 damaged or destroyed residential buildings throughout the city. In the historic Podilskyi district alone, strikes hit four buildings, including a nine-story block that lost its top five floors.
Emergency workers used ladder trucks to reach survivors trapped in a 21-story high-rise.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city’s military administration, warned that the casualty count might rise as operations continue, saying, “Unfortunately, this is not the final information.”
Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that fragments struck a 25-story apartment building in the Darnytskyi district, killing two people. Flames also engulfed a 30-story tower in the same district, forcing a mass evacuation.
The violence extended beyond the capital. Regional Governor Mykola Kalashnyk confirmed one death and 15 injuries in the broader Kyiv region. Serhiy Lysak, head of the Odesa city administration, reported that the southern port city also came under fire, injuring at least one person.
Air defenses engaged incoming drones throughout the night following an early warning from President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The intensity of the bombardment prompted neighboring Poland to briefly scramble fighter jets as a preventive measure. The latest escalation follows a Thursday attack that killed 31 people.
