A Dhaka court scheduled a virtual hearing on Wednesday to rule on showing former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque arrested in an attempted murder and explosives case.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah set the date on Monday because the relevant case documents were unavailable. DMP Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain confirmed the matter.

Authorities produced Khairul in court. However, the judge postponed the hearing because the primary case file is at the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court. The court directed that the next hearing proceed with Khairul appearing virtually.

The case involves an incident that occurred on 4 August 2024, during the July uprising. Protesters were in front of the Mohakhali Setu Bhaban. As they marched toward Shahbagh, they were attacked with gunfire, cocktails, and hand bombs.

The assault injured 25 to 30 people, including Uzzal Mia, who later filed the case at Banani Police Station.

Banani Police Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam, the investigating officer, applied to show the former Chief Justice arrested on 2 July. Khairul has been in custody since Detective Branch (DB) Police arrested him at his Dhanmondi residence on the morning of 24 July 2025.

Khairul was sent to jail in connection with the murder of Jubodal activist Abdul Kaiyum Ahad in Jatrabari during the July uprising.

The legal history of Khairul involves cases, including two arrests on 29 July 2025 at the Fatullah and Port police stations in Narayanganj via virtual hearing. On 30 July 2025, he was shown arrested in a Shahbagh Police Station case involving allegations of corruption and the issuance of malicious, illegal, and forged judgments during his judicial career.

On 10 September 2025, authorities showed him arrested in an additional case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Although an Appellate Bench led by the Chief Justice upheld his bail in those five cases on 28 April, new cases followed. On 30 March, authorities showed him arrested in the murder of student Md Arif at Jatrabari and garment worker Rubel at Adabor.

While the High Court granted him interim bail for those two murders on 12 May - which the Appellate Division’s Chamber Court upheld on 20 May - he faced further charges. On 16 May, Jatrabari Sub-Inspector Md Ibrahim Khalil applied to show him arrested in the Khobaib murder case.

Following a hearing on 23 May, the court granted that request. On 30 June, a High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajal and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher granted him bail, an order then upheld by the Supreme Court’s Chamber Judge Court.
