The top official of Yemen's Houthi armed group has said that the United States and Israel assassinated Iran's late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, especifically because of his support for the Palestinian liberation struggle.
Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, a spokesperson for the Iran-backed group, shared his opinion during an interview with Iranian media on Sunday, local time.
According to Iran's Press TV, al-Bukhaiti described Khamenei as a symbol of resistance and independence for nations seeking freedom from US and Israeli dominance.
Al-Bukhaiti further asserted that Khamenei's intellectual and political foresight across the Islamic world, along with his dedicated efforts to liberate Palestine, were the primary reasons why Western powers were determined to assassinate him.
The Houthis remain one of the key Iranian-backed resistance groups operating across the Middle East.
Since capturing the capital city of Sanaa in 2014, the Houthis have maintained firm control over the city and large swaths of the country. This is despite a long-running campaign by the Saudi-led "Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen" aimed at reinstating the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
