Argentina defender Nicolás Otamendi has unveiled a new tattoo honoring one of the most memorable moments of his international career—the goal he scored against Brazil at the Maracanã during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in 2023.
Following Argentina’s victory over Algeria, Otamendi revealed the latest addition to his tattoo-covered body through an Instagram post. The artwork, inked on his right knee, depicts part of the soccer field with two red lines tracing the ball’s path from a corner kick to Argentina’s opening goal.
The historic match took place on Nov. 21, 2023, during the sixth round of World Cup qualifying. Argentina secured a victory in a game remembered not only for the result but also for crowd disturbances involving Argentine supporters before kickoff, which delayed the start of the match by nearly 30 minutes.
An hour into the game, Giovani Lo Celso delivered a cross from the left flank. Otamendi rose above the defense and headed the ball beyond goalkeeper Alisson Becker into the right corner of the net.
During the celebration, Otamendi pointed toward the world champions’ badge on his jersey and looked toward the home crowd.
The goal left a lasting mark on the Argentine defender, who is now playing what is expected to be his final World Cup with the national team. Beyond deepening Brazil’s struggles at the time, the strike also ended Brazil’s unbeaten home record in World Cup qualifying at the Maracanã.
