Former law advisor and University of Dhaka professor Asif Nazrul has said on social media that his favorite team in this year’s World Cup is Iran national football team. In a Facebook post, he wrote: “My favorite team in this year’s World Cup is Iran.”
Actress and singer Meher Afroz Shaon shared a screenshot of Asif Nazrul’s Facebook post on her own account and made a satirical comment. She wrote: “It is Iran’s misfortune that they do not have a patriotic sports advisor who would use ‘logic’ to stop the Iran football team from participating in the World Cup.”
Shaon’s comment refers to Asif Nazrul’s earlier role as an advisor (to the interim government), when Bangladesh was prevented from participating in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in India. In contrast, despite Iran being drawn into conflict following bombings and war involving the United States, Iran’s football team traveled to the United States to take part in the football FIFA World Cup. On this basis, Shaon criticized Asif Nazrul’s post.
In essence, Shaon implied that if someone like Asif Nazrul were an advisor in Iran, he might have tried to keep Iran out of the World Cup—yet Asif Nazrul himself appears to support Iran’s participation in the tournament hosted by the United States.
Meanwhile, although Asif Nazrul posted about his preferred team on Facebook, he did not keep the comment option open. As a result, no reactions from netizens could be seen.
