Court Gives Man Death for Rape-Murder in Jhenaidah

A court has sentenced Abu Taher to death for the rape and murder of a five-year-old child in Kaliganj, Jhenaidah.
State lawyer Akidul Islam confirmed the matter on Monday. Judge Md Saleuzzaman of the Jhenaidah Nari-O-Shishu Nirjatan Daman Tribunal delivered the verdict, also imposing a Tk 5,00,000 fine on the convict.
The court reached the decision within just five working days of the trial’s commencement, around four months after the incident occurred.
According to the case statement, on 26 February, Taher lured the child named Tabassum Akter Toya to his room by promising to buy her chips and juice. He then raped the child and then strangled her to death.
To hide the crime, Taher stuffed the girl’s body into a sack that same night and concealed it in the septic tank of the nearby a school. Although Taher initially fled the area, police captured him during a raid at a rented house in Kushtia.
Following his arrest, Taher confessed to the crime to the police and later provided a formal confession in court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) and Investigating Officer of the case Jellal Hossain submitted the charge sheet on 26 May. The court recorded testimonies from 16 witnesses before concluding legal arguments on Sunday.
