Egypt made football history at BC Place Vancouver by coming from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1, marking their first-ever FIFA World Cup 2026 win.
The landmark victory arrived 92 years and 25 days after they made their tournament debut.
New Zealand initiated the contest with high intensity. Following early threats from Sarpreet Singh and Elijah Just, the All Whites capitalized in the 15th minute. Finn Surman rose to meet a corner, powering a bullet of a header past the Egyptian defense to give his side a well-earned lead.
Egypt increased the pressure before the break, as Mohamed Salah and Emam Ashour both searched for an equalizer. The intensity remained high after the restart, with New Zealand goalkeeper Max Crocombe producing a crucial save to deny Salah within the first minute of the second half.
A pivotal moment occurred when Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir stopped Callum McCowatt’s flicked header with a terrific save, preventing New Zealand from doubling their advantage.
Seizing the momentum, Mostafa Zico pulled Hossam Hassan’s side level in the 58th minute with a free header.
Salah provided the winning moment nine minutes later, finishing a sophisticated team move with a precise low strike into the corner of the net. The goal ignited wild celebrations across the stadium.
Trezeguet added the final touch in the 82nd minute, netting Egypt’s third goal to secure the historic three points.
