Cabo Verde secured another historic result against a former FIFA World Cup 2026 champion, battling Uruguay to a 2-2 draw at Miami Stadium.
Following a scoreless stalemate with Spain, manager Bubista’s squad demonstrated remarkable resilience by overcoming a halftime deficit to share points with the South American giants.
The underdog side initiated the scoring in the 21st minute after Telmo Arcanjo earned a critical free-kick. From 34 yards out, Kevin Pina drilled a low strike through a gap in the defensive wall and into the bottom corner to give Cabo Verde a shock lead.
Uruguay responded aggressively, shifting the momentum with two goals in the closing minutes of the first half. In the 44th minute, Rodrigo Bentancur sent a header against the post, allowing Maxi Araujo to stoop low and nod the rebound home.
During the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time, Araujo turned provider, knocking the ball down for Agustin Canobbio to cushion his shot past goalkeeper Vozinha.
The match leveled again in the 61st minute when Varela took advantage of a defensive miscommunication within the Uruguayan backline to slot home the equalizer. Despite Uruguay’s relentless pressure for the remainder of the game, Cabo Verde’s defense held firm.
While the legendary Luis Suarez watched and cheered from the stands, Pico Lopes and Sidny Lopes Cabral masterfully marshalled the Cabo Verde defense to ensure the draw.
