Negotiations between Iran, the United States, Qatar, and Pakistan at Burgenstock, Switzerland hit a deadlock as the Iranian delegation suspended its participation.
The talks, initiated under a 60-day window established by the 14-point Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), faltered shortly after beginning.
A source told Tasnim news agency that, “Iran-US talks in the quadrilateral format began at around 3 pm and were suspended for a half-hour break for consultations between the delegations after lasting about an hour and a half.”
However, the Iranian team refused to return to the table following threatening and insulting social media posts from Trump.
During the initial session, which Iranian media reported lasted only eight minutes, the Iranian delegation explicitly protested breaches of commitments, particularly paragraph 1 of the MoU.
While discussions avoided nuclear issues to focus on Lebanon and US compliance, Iran set strict requirements for future nuclear dialogue. The delegation insisted that nuclear talks remain conditional on the implementation of US commitments under paragraphs 1, 4, 10, and 11 of the MoU.
Iran also demands the accelerated release of frozen assets and the issuance of oil export certificates. Beyond financial terms, the Director of the Al-Mayadeen network office in Geneva stated that Iran’s response to the suspension remains clear.
Iranian delegation will reportedly only return to negotiations after Trump issues an apology and Israel completes a full withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
Despite the standoff, mediators from Qatar and Pakistan continue to exchange messages between the parties, though they have not yet reached a conclusion. The future of the 60-day negotiation window remains uncertain as the Iranian team considers its departure.
The diplomatic community now awaits an official statement from the Iranian negotiating team to determine the results achieved so far.
