Two senior leaders from the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami attended the janaza of Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, a presidium member of the now-banned Awami League. BNP leader and former city mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain said in his remarks that the late Mosharraf Hossain had contributed significantly to Chattogram.
The janaza was held at 11:00am on Thursday at the Jamiatul Falah Mosque premises in the city. Jamaat-e-Islami leader Dr AKM Fazlul Haque also attended the prayer. He was a candidate for the Chattogram-9 (Kotwali) constituency in the 13th national parliamentary election.
Attendees described the presence of leaders from BNP and Jamaat at the janaza as a gesture of political etiquette. They said that despite political differences, maintaining mutual respect in times of grief remains important.
Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain arrived shortly before the janaza began and paid tribute by placing flowers on the body. He was later requested to speak.
In his remarks, Mayor Shahadat Hossain said, “As mayor and on behalf of the BNP, and one may say on behalf of the Honorable Prime Minister, I express condolences. I extend sympathy to the bereaved family. We believe everyone will always remember his contributions. I thank all those who are present here. Everyone should pray to Almighty Allah to grant him Jannah.”
However, no other major political leader except Mayor Shahadat Hossain was seen making remarks. Although Jamaat leader Fazlul Haque was present, he did not speak.
Leaders including National Party politician and former mayor Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury and former Communist Party of Bangladesh president Comrade Shah Alam also spoke. No senior Awami League leader was seen due to the party’s banned status, although Chattogram North District Awami League General Secretary Sheikh Ataur Rahman and Joint Secretary Debashish Palit were present at the venue.
A final janaza for Mosharraf Hossain was held after Asr prayers on Thursday at his ancestral home in Mirsarai. No prominent leaders from the Awami League, BNP, or Jamaat were seen there.
